POLE POSITION FOR SAINZ AS FERRARI DOMINATE QUALIFYING
Sainz claims maiden pole in thrilling Silverstone qualifying
Carlos Sainz Jr. of Scuderia Ferrari secured a sensational maiden Formula 1 pole position at the British Grand Prix qualifying at Silverstone on Saturday, July 2.
The Spaniard, who has been consistently impressive throughout the 2022 season, delivered a stunning lap to edge out his teammate, Charles Leclerc, by just 0.072 seconds.
The qualifying session was dominated by Ferrari, with Leclerc and Sainz occupying the top two positions. Max Verstappen of Red Bull Racing finished third, 0.335 seconds behind Sainz.
Lewis Hamilton of Mercedes, who is seeking a record-extending eighth British Grand Prix title, had to settle for fourth place, 0.553 seconds behind Sainz.
Sainz's pole position is the first for a Spanish driver in Formula 1 since Fernando Alonso at the 2012 German Grand Prix. It is also the first pole for Ferrari since the 2019 Mexican Grand Prix.
