New Zealands Spring Thunderstorms And Tornados

New Zealand's Spring Thunderstorms and Tornados

Wild Weather Warnings Issued as New Zealand braces for Severe Spring Thunderstorms and Tornados

Thunderstorms and tornadoes aren’t unheard of in New Zealand, but the country’s weather authority, MetService, has issued wild weather warnings for the weekend as it prepares for severe thunderstorms and possible tornadoes.

Thunderstorms

The thunderstorms are expected to hit the country’s North Island on Saturday. The storms are expected to bring heavy rain, and there is a risk of flooding. Winds of up to 120 kilometers per hour (75 miles per hour) are also possible.

The strongest winds are expected to be in the Waikato, Bay of Plenty, and Taupo regions. MetService has warned that these winds could bring down trees and power lines.

Tornadoes

In addition to thunderstorms, MetService has also warned of the possibility of tornadoes. Tornadoes are rare in New Zealand, but they do occur from time to time. The risk of tornadoes is highest in the central and southern North Island.

MetService has advised people to be prepared for the storms. This includes having a plan in place in case the power goes out. People should also stay away from windows during the storms.

Preparing for Spring Storms

There are a few things you can do to prepare for spring storms:

  • Make sure your home is in good repair and that your roof is secure.
  • Have a plan in place in case the power goes out.
  • Prepare an emergency kit that includes food, water, and first aid supplies.
  • Stay away from windows during storms.
  • Listen to the radio or television for weather updates.

By following these tips, you can help keep yourself and your family safe during severe spring thunderstorms and tornadoes.
